Apart from living in various coastal habitats, they enter estuaries and settle in the saline waters. However, now they are classified under a separate fish family, Scombridae. Earlier gnome fishes were also included in the family Pomatomidae. The bluefish is the only surviving species of the Pomatomidae family.
